The forest located in the INR of Inagua is one of the best preserved representations of the Canary Island Pine in the archipelago. In it there are some of the most outstanding specimens, including the so-called “select copse”, groups of trees that are considered to be superior to the rest of the woodland as far as genetic conservation and quality seed production are concerned. They are longeval trees of enormous importance within the ecosystem, since they carry a valuable gene pool, as much in terms of production as of conservation (they are of great production value as they yield seeds for the seedlings employed in reforestation). Moreover, these specimens are the main seed producers of the forest, which means an important food resource for graniverous species, such as the endangered Blue Chaffinch of Gran Canaria.

The localization and monitoring of these trees, as well as their appropriate management, will prevent the loss of the species’ genetic variability and will ensure a major source of trophic resources for other species.
